A Fresh Take on Formal Living & Dining: Project Want That

At KJ Design Collective, we believe that formal spaces don’t have to feel stuffy—they can be warm, inviting, and seamlessly blend elegance with comfort. Our recent renovation for Project Want That is the perfect example of how thoughtful updates can transform a home’s atmosphere while honoring its architectural character.

Creating the Foundation: Floors, Paint & Trim

The first step in the transformation was introducing new luxury vinyl plank (LVP) floors, which instantly brought warmth and continuity throughout the home. Paired with fresh paint in a soft, timeless palette, the backdrop was set for layering in texture and contrast.

To add depth, we gave the windows and trim a moody black finish. This small but powerful detail elevated the architecture, framing the natural light beautifully and adding a sophisticated edge to the otherwise neutral space.

Elevating the Ceilings: Wood Veneer & Brass Accents

The coffered ceilings were reimagined with a gorgeous wood veneer inlay, drawing the eye upward and adding natural warmth. To complement this detail, we installed new decorative brass lighting, blending modern elegance with a touch of timeless glamour. These details brought richness and dimension to the formal dining area while keeping the atmosphere fresh and approachable.

Styling with Intention

Styling was the finishing touch that tied the entire project together. Here are a few of the tips we implemented and that you can apply in your own home:

• Mix seating options. A combination of a bench, upholstered chairs, and a cozy settee around the dining table creates a casual yet elevated feel.

• Anchor with art. Oversized, serene artwork (like the framed boat photograph in the dining area) sets the tone and provides a calming focal point.

• Play with greenery. Adding potted plants and stems in oversized vases softens the formality of the furniture and instantly makes the space feel lived-in.

• Balance neutrals with contrast. Neutral furnishings layered with darker accents like the moody window trim and deep green chairs create depth without overwhelming the palette.

• Layer rugs for texture. Area rugs in subtle patterns and soft tones help delineate spaces and add warmth underfoot.
